A comeback filled with culture

[tweetmeme] Back to work, university or school, September is for most of us that fatidic month when post vacation blues appear making whish all sorts of things.

Gladly for us September is also the month when most Museums unveil their yearly program to keep us entertained during the upcoming year. And this one we’re starting pretty strong; here are some propositions…

SSE – Bienne (Switzerland )

Everything is possible in Bienne. You can find videoart, sculpture, installations, street-art only visible while connected through wi-fi and of course, performances. Simon Lamunière is the director of this 11th edition of “Swiss Sculpture Exhibition” which will take place until October 25th.

SSE

As he says “Urban art is most of the times imperceptible as there is too much information on the streets surrounding the works: ads, people, traffic-lights…”. Playing with this idea Lamunière has chosen and integrated those Works with the urban landscape in a way that many times is very hard to distinguish them from that “informative noise” from the city. “Finding them is like a hide & seek game.” For more info here.

Vraoum! @ La Maison Rouge – Paris

VRAOUM ! is an onomatopoeia that conjures up an image. It is a trajectory with a car at one end and a concept at the other. Vraoum! is also a complete homage to the comic industry. Lately BDs (as French call them) have been a source of inspiration (if not salvation) for many artists. From the Marvel blockbusters (that Disney will control from now on) to the most refined and imaginary works of Takashi Murakami.

This exhibition is about how modern art has been influenced by the BDs aesthetics. La Maison Rouge takes the 9th art seriously and invites visionary artists like Gilles Barbier mixed with classics like Tintin or Asterix.

Until September 27th. More info here.

Experimenta Design Lisbon

The theme of the 5th edition of EXD launches an in-depth analysis on the subject of time. Focusing primarily on the flows and mechanisms of acceleration and fragmentation, it then surveys its impacts across contemporary society, which manifest themselves at all levels: the development of objects and devices that heighten the capacities of the human being, the growing mobility of both individuals and information, the redesign of the space where collective life unfolds, changes in communication processes and the appearance of new structures and languages, or in other words, innovation.

The extensive programme includes Quick, Quick, Slow, an exhibition that explores the dimension of time in graphic design; Timeless, an experimental showcase of new concepts and strategies addressing the motto ‘Less is More’; and Stop & Think, an editorial project that challenges leading magazines from across the world to place insightful criticism at the top of their agendas.

From Wednesday 9 September 2009 until Sunday 8 November 2009 on Various locations, Lisbon, Portugal. For more info here.

International Istanbul Biennal

Seems like it’s all about Biennals lately, but the (also) 11th edition is of special interest because it poses questions of economic and social urgency today.

Its title, “What Keeps Mankind Alive?” Is from the closing song of the second act of Bertolt Brecht’s “The Threepenny Opera”, written 80 years ago and interpreted by many artists of various genres like Tom Waits, or The Pet Shop Boys. It will take place between September 12 and November 8. The three venues of the Biennial, Tobacco Warehouse, Antrepo No.3 and Feriköy Greek School, will feature more than 120 projects of 70 artists, in a wide spectrum ranging from audio and video installations to photography, sculpture and painting.
