Tim Burton @ MOMA – New York

Tim Burton deserves one and a thousand retrospectives like the one starting next Sunday at the New York Museum of Modern Art. The rather surrealistic & dark American director who has had just as many cult successes as misunderstood failures (a great career of ups & downs) gets a major retrospective consisting of a gallery exhibition and a film series.

The retrospective considers Burton’s career greatly linked to Disney as a director (Mars Attacks!, Beetlejuice, Nightmare b4 Christmas…) producer, writer, and concept artist for live-action and animated films, along with his work as a fiction writer, photographer and illustrator.

from "The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories"

The prolific director who after producing 9 is now finishing his so awaited version of Alice in Wonderland (with his talisman actors Johnny Deep & Helena Bonham Carter) has always had an abnormal visual & quirky imagination.

Taking inspiration from sources in pop culture, Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as a spiritual experience, influencing a generation of young artists working in film, video, and graphics.

The exhibition has been organized by Ron Magliozzi, Assistant Curator, and Jenny He, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Film, with Rajendra Roy, The Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film.
