VeVo killed the video star

[tweetmeme] Lads & ladies, rock & roll. The latest invention from the music industry, the “music evolution revolution”, the newest portal to kill MTV or the “Hulu for music vids” just saw the light yesterday night… and there is so much to tell…

Vevo hasn’t generated as much buzz as Hulu did (barely 5000 facebook followers vs 300.000 for Hulu) during its public launch because the music industry is not what it used to be 10 years ago (probably since the MTV stopped being “music” and became a “reality show”); studios are struggling to find their way into the digital business model and users now prefer to use social networks & applications like last.fm, deezer, lala & so on rather than dedicated portals or tv channels. Once again the Internet swallows TV’s natural environment.

After the launch of the Hulu bomb, a desperate but successful move, the next logical sector was music. No more illegal video downloads? Maybe no more illegal mp3s?

Certainly, the guys at Goog are not stupid and as soon as Hulu started mining their video monopoly they decided to take on the music industry. They put the technology (Utube) & get the advertising revenue plus Vevo-branded channels across their other products, like those dedicated Youtube artist pages…  what could go wrong?

That’s why they initially partnered with Universal Music & came up with this free-ads-pay video&tunes portal which should (if everything goes well) delight & conquer most of us. And if you thought they were going to leave any untied knot… after Sony Music in June, EMI announced yesterday that they’ll be joining the party (Warner Music is still out of the equation…), and many other independent labels, even exclusive content from CBS Interactive or AOL is expected…. Not a bad start.

So what’s in the menu? Vevo have prepared for us some nice “Hors d’oeuvre” with notable premieres like Mariah’s new “H.A.T.E.U”, John Mayer’s “Who says” or 50 Cent’s “Do u think about me”….. See that MTV? Major labels now choose an on-line platform to launch their gigs as with Myspace! and not yours precisely!!!!

As a main dish you’ll get 80% of world music videos completely exportable, customized “free” playlists (up to 75 clips), lyrics, artist dedicated pages and in not such a distant future you’ll get HD videos, legal downloads, tickets concerts and much more. Once again only yanks get the privilege to access Vevo and a European launch is just as probable as a European Hulu.

Unfortunately you also get as dessert all those ads you love so much & can’t skip + the Vevo brand in any music video you could imagine …. Google’s courtesy of course. Similar to the Hulu model? Well, the look & feel is just copy-paste but naaaa way better monetized!!!

See you @ Bristol
