[tweetmeme] What could be better than an exhibition about music, art and…. video games!!??
Playlist is a trip through art from the 90s made with “obsolete” technologies such as vinyls, old pcs & gaming consoles… in order to build new instruments. This is the second exhibition of the “Mediateca Expandida”, part of the Industrial Creation Art Center of Gijón (Asturias).
An interesting trend inside contemporary creation is what Rosalind Krauss named “reinventing the medium”. When a support becomes outdated it enters into a unique relationship with artistic production. What Krauss denominates “previous” is that obsolete concept defined by Walter Benjamin, who says that only when a technology is eclipsed by its own obsolescence the memories of its unique, utopian promise are liberated.
The thing is that adjectives like “novelty” which are essentially attatched to anything digital can hardly cope with the obsolescence we’ve talked about. But after a few years most technologies become outdated, our electronics life cycles are getting shorter, some mediums perish quickly others survive & reinvent themselves like video-games.
The “core” of the exhibition explores the “chiptune scene”, developed after manipulating obsolete gaming technologies to create new musical instruments. Playlist claims retro-gaming inside visual arts as an update of this musical phenomena which has become quite popular all across the globe through clubs & festivals.
Playlist is not only about exhibiting works but also instruments, tools, software, hardware, communities & platforms as well as a series of concerts. Playlist will also serve as a starting point for an archive of materials produced by artists and musicians, and as a relational context where visitors can practice with tools produced by artists, and take part in workshops, lectures, improvised performances.
Here’s a list with the participating artists:
Paul B. Davis (UK), Jeff Donaldson / NoteNdo (DE), Dragan Espenschied (DE), Gino Esposto / Micromusic.net (CH), Gijs Gieskes (NL), André Gonçalves (PT), Mike Johnston / Mike in Mono (UK), Joey Mariano / Animal Style (US), Raquel Meyers (SP), Mikro Orchestra (PL), Don Miller / No-carrier (US), Jeremiah Johnson / Nullsleep (US), Tristan Perich (US), Rabato (SP), Gebhard Sengmüller (AT), Alexei Shulgin (RU), Paul Slocum (USA), Tonylight (IT), VjVISUALOOP (IT).
